Steven Leavitt

Patent AttorneySteven Leavitt has fourteen years of combined experience in the technology and law fields. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in chemical engineering along with a minor in chemistry in 1991. He earned his Juris Doctorate with a specialization in intellectual property law from George Mason University in 1999. His primary area of practice focuses on patent, trademark, and other intellectual property law.

Prior to attending law school, Mr. Leavitt served as an engineer and scientist catering to numerous industries that include pulp and paper, biotechnology, food, and pharmaceuticals. As a technology professional, he developed and conducted laboratory research and analysis. Mr. Leavitt managed product trials at various industrial sites, gaining firsthand engineering and marketing experience.

Utilizing this practical experience, Mr. Leavitt became a patent examiner for the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). There, he examined applications in the chemical and materials engineering group particularly in pulp and paper, coating applications, and tobacco arts for technical accuracy and patentability. While employed full-time as a patent examiner, Mr. Leavitt attended George Mason University School of Law, Intellectual Property tract. This allowed him to appreciate the combination of academic and practical experience in the intellectual property field.

Since graduating from law school, Mr. Leavitt has assisted clients in various areas of intellectual property law. He has prepared and prosecuted patent applications in many high tech areas including Food, Fuel cell, Computer, Semiconductor, Automotive, Paper, and Plastics. Also, he has counseled clients regarding technology purchases, patent infringement analysis, patentability analysis, trademark registrations, and others. Some representative clients he has assisted include Frito-Lay, Inc., IBM Corporation, General Electric Company, Delphi Corporation, and Fossil Inc.

Mr. Leavitt is a registered patent attorney and is a member of the State Bars of Texas and Connecticut. Additionally, he is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, American Bar Association, Dallas Bar Association, Dallas-Ft. Worth Intellectual Property Law Association, Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry, and American Chemical Society.

Steven resides in the Dallas suburb of Rowlett, Texas with his wife of 14 years Jillian, his sons, Chasen and Trevan, and his two dogs Maggie and Austin. Like most lawyers he enjoys golf, as well as sailing (although admittedly it has been awhile), anything to do with the space program, and spending time with his family.
